Choices Choices Choices! That’s what I got for you today! That and of course some good ole fashion time travel!

The Beast Below

Now imagine for a moment. You are sitting at your computer surfing the net when all of a sudden a pop up appears on your screen that has two buttons that say ‘Forget’ and ‘Reject’. Along with this pop up is a message that reads “A video is shortly going to appear on your monitor. After you watch this video you will need to make a choice. On the pop up screen you have two buttons, forget and reject. If you press forget you will forget everything you’ve just seen and continue on with your live as if nothing ever happen. Of course if you choose reject you will be faced with a dire consequence that will effect the lives of everyone you know.”

In this episode of Doctor Who everyone is faced with this choice. The Doctor takes himself and Amy into the distant future aboard what seems to be a British city ship. Later on in the episode you find out that every person who lives on this ship has to make a choice, and then towards the end of the episode you find out what that choice is.

Now before I continue I just want to express some opinions on choices. I am no doctor and I don’t claim to know how the human brain works and how people tend to make the choices they make in their every day lives. But it seems to me that in general the human race will most likely choose whatever leads them away from bad consequences for themselves and if something else can take the burden of their choices while in the end they completely forgotten what they done, then why not choose that?

The point is in this episode of Doctor Who Earth’s sun expands and completely fries the planet to a crisp. The humans remaining on earth during that time escape into space to find a new home. I guess at some point something goes wrong and they get lost or just cant find another place to live and are most likely about to lose whatever power/food they have left when all of a sudden a space whale happens to come out from no where in their general direction. Now according to the show, this space whale went to the humans because their children were crying and didn’t want the children to suffer, so it went over to them to help out. But humans being humans decide to do what they do best and over power this space whale and build their own city on its back, torturing it to move across space so they could survive. Every so many years every adult in this city has to vote on whether to continue torturing this space whale (which might i add is the last of its kind), or set it free.

Now here is the consequences of the choices. They all watch a video that explains and shows them what is going on. Once they watch the video they make their choice. Continue torturing the creature to survive and forget about everything and continue on with their lives. Or Set the creature free, which will end up killing the entire race of humans aboard this ship. Now may i remind you this whale came to them on its own free will to save the humans because it couldn’t stand that their children were sad. Instead of thinking logically they enslaved the space whale and are now bound by their choice until The Doctor comes around and eventually fixes the problem (Technically Amy fixes the problem).

What are the chances of you running into a space whale that is the last of its kind in the vast area of space. If they would have tried to communicate with the creature they would have never had to make their choices and wouldn’t need to forget over and over the mistake they have brought upon themselves.

With that said. Overall the episode was ok. I believe I’ve enjoyed the other episodes more so far over this one but not at all was it a bad story. The Doctor and Amy encounter this enemy that reminds me of those carnival fortune teller machines. I didn’t really understand the purpose of this enemy though? I guess they were suppose to be a type of enforcer of the humans on this ship, or police of sorts. But if everyone on this ship chose to forget everything then you would think everyone would live happy lives. I guess you might have your criminals and these creatures would take care of them.

The Doctor and Amy meet the queen of this ship and her only reasoning I believe of knowing him is because the royal family line always knows of The Doctor. Even though she might of known who he was I never understood how she would know he was coming. I am sure The Doctor hasn’t met every queen in British history though I could be wrong. It was as if though she was expecting him to come and save the day.

In the end though Amy figures out what needs to be done to make everyone happy and forces the queen to free the whale. Which doesn’t go anywhere anyways because it wanted to help the children. Of course if I was the whale I would be pissed off and initiate some attack on the humans for torturing me for so many years. Its funny though out The Doctor changes his mind in this episode. He gets pissed off at Amy because she chose to forget the video when it was forced upon her but then seems not to care any more when she figures out that they didn’t need to torture it in the first place.

The episode ends with The Doctor and Amy returning to the Tardis and when they are about to leave what happens!!!! The Doctor gets a phone call from Winston Churchill who looks like he is about to get attacked by Daleks!!!!!!!

*insert cliffhanger here*

So after a few hours of trying to figure out how to officially start this blog I have decided that I will just start off talking about the first episode of Steven Moffats 2010 series and work my way up the episodes from there. Also even though it should be obvious this blog will be spoiler heavy. So if you care about spoilers I would suggest not reading these until watching that episode…

The Eleventh Hour

Now i admit, even though I am a huge fan of Doctor Who I was expecting to be disappointed when I started to watch this episode. I say this because even though a lot of the previous episodes before this one was good during the ’2005′ series the specials that aired during 2009 in my opinion was utter garbage. Now i am sure some people out there actually enjoyed what they seen but I wasn’t one of them. See, Doctor Who is a British Icon. You could probably walk up to mostly anyone in the UK and ask them if they know what Doctor Who is. They may never have seen the show itself but I bet they could tell you at least one thing about it.

The thing about the 2009 specials is whomever watched the show most likely knew that The Doctor was going to die and regenerate. It was known for almost a year that David Tennant would be leaving the show and a new star would take over. So you would think that because someone who at the time was probably one of the better Doctors that they would make a decent effort in having him go. It seemed to me though little effort was put into those specials. The writing didn’t seem all great. David Tennant didn’t seem like he cared about his role anymore so you seen a lack in his performance. It was as if the show was purposely being sabotaged so when the official series did come back no one wanted to watch it.

So here we are starting the episode off iffy on whether or not it is actually going to be good. I do have to say my worries on the new series was quickly washed away. When the Tardis finally crash lands on its side into the a shed we see The Doctor pop out of the Tardis and ask for an apple. Already he is trying to learn who he has become. Going into Amelia’s house and ravaging through a variety of food before finally settling for fish sticks and custard gave me a few chuckles as those scenes eased me into what ended up being a really good episode.

What was interesting to see during this scene and actually throughout most of the episode itself was how Matt Smith surprisingly sounded a lot and acted like David Tennant’s version of The Doctor. I assume it was probably because Matt Smith admitted he never seen an episode of Doctor Who, so he had to go over older episodes and scripts to learn his role and ended up carrying over the essence of Tennant’s doctor. Of course in later episodes Matt Smith has developed his own Doctor and carries little to none of Tennant’s version over.

So what exactly do we have in this episode. We have a new Doctor, a new companion, a weird flying snake alien that can change into human form, a race of one eyes alien space ship prison guards (that is right, they are prison guards that are space ship looking creatures with one giant eye), a computer virus and much much more. Now as much as this sounds like gibberish I assure you as a whole it made a great episode.

Even though overall I thought the episode was awesome. It left a few unanswered questions. Like the purpose of this flying snake alien race. It supposedly broke out of some space prison through a crack in space time that exited out of a wall in a girls bedroom. It sits around doing basically nothing for 12 years, then The Doctor shows back up and it wants to cause some kinda of trouble, but what kind of trouble? I am still unsure of what the thing was trying to accomplish. It tormented The Doctor and Amy (Amelia) by following them around in a few forms but never really doing anything but talking. When the thing finally talks it goes on about something that sounds like a prophecy and then gets swooped away by the Atraxi (the one eyes space ship prison guards).

Another thing that had me asking questions was the reason why the guards waited so long to do anything at all. I believe i had a discussion with my friend Steve about this but i cant remember if we ever came to a conclusion. I just think its odd. Some prisoner escapes and you have a general idea where its out. Might not know the exact location, but its on earth somewhere. Yet you wait 12 years to do anything about it, and when you finally do something you decide you want to wrap the planet in a force shield and incinerate every life form on the planet just to kill one prisoner. The Doctor puts a swift end to that though. After the Atraxi get what they want and leave the doctor literally calls them in space on a cell phone and demands their return. After that he confronts them and ask them to basically ‘google’ him and then they run away knowing now The Doctor isn’t someone to mess around with.

After these events take place The Doctor’s broken Tardis finishes repairing itself and he sets off to check out his new ride. He returns 2 years later and picks up his new companion, Amy Pond, for fun times in space and time. A few things that was interesting during this last scene was an imaging of the crack that was on Amy’s wall when she was a child was now on The Doctors monitor inside the Tardis. Also the clock when he was taking off had changed from 11:59am to 12:00pm when it was the middle of the night. As we know now that a few more episodes have aired, the crack is a recurring them and we already know a little bit about what it can do but the time shift in the clock is something new that i have noticed.

We are already 5 episodes into the 2010 series and I can’t wait to finish the remaining ones. Next blog I shall be writing about the next episode in this series, The Beast Below, and everyone will learn what happens when space whales hear children cry.

Back before I realized I was a fan of Doctor Who, I unknowingly was one. Some years ago I had watched this movie on TV. I thought to myself how interesting this movie was and the events that was happening kept me in awe. I am sure at the time there was bigger and better things out there but I didn’t care.

Then some time in 2005 or 2006 there was this so called ‘new show’ airing on the SciFi channel. A friend and I would sit and watch Stargate every Friday and then talk about what we seen. It was weekly ritual we had that would eventually spread into different shows. So one Friday we seen previews for a new show called Doctor  Who that was coming on. At the time we seen this preview we though the show looked kinda dumb. But we decided to give the show a chance and watch the pilot episode.

After watching the Pilot episode we was still kinda iffy on weather or not we wanted to continue watching this show. So we decided to give it one more shot and watch the following weeks episode. It was then we fell in love with the show.

As I was sitting there watching the second episode I started to have memories of this blue police box as if I had seen it before. Later I would realize that I had seen Doctor Who before this new series started. But that is a another story. So now on top of our weekly Stargate discussions we would not talk about the awesomeness that was Doctor Who.

The thing is though. Its years later and my friend and I don’t talk about Doctor Who like we used too. So this is what this blog is for. As the weeks go by I will watch an episode and post my thoughts here on my blog. I will also revisit older episodes in the 2005 series and post about them here as I get around to them. Maybe I will post about other shows or things going on in my life but mostly this blog will cater to the obsession I have that is known as Doctor Who!
